"This is the story of
how Santa’s Reindeer got their
names. You see, it all began way back in the long-ago when Santa was
choosing the very first reindeer team to pull his sleigh on Christmas
Eve.
Now Santa knew that being on
the reindeer team wasn’t the easiest sort of thing to be. It would take
a special kind of strength, and a little magic, to pull a sleigh full
of toys around the world in just one night.
What Santa needed was a dream team, the best
of the best reindeer athletes to do the job. So, he decided to have a
competition — sort of like the Olympics. He called it… THE REINDEER
GAMES."
"One day in early Spring Santa made a great announcement:
“Hear Ye, Hear Ye Reindeer One and All
Reindeer Short and
Reindeer Tall
~
I will need a reindeer
team to help to pull my sleigh
so all the little children
will have toys on Christmas Day.
They must be strong, they
must be swift to fly around the world
In just one night
delivering toys to every boy and girl.
~
I will host a great event
for reindeer far and wide
To try out for my special
team that’s harnessed side by side.
Deer from all around the
world will train upon my course
That sits beneath the icy
pole way up and to the north.
~
All throughout the summer
days they’ll practice for their flight.
They’ll train from
morning’s early sun til stars come out at night.
They’ll run while pulling
heavy loads and learn to jump so high
Then finally the day will
come when they will learn to fly.
~
My team must work together
and have hearts so strong and kind
To carry love from up
above to every home they find.
So if you think you’ve
what it takes to play the Reindeer Games
And you finish first in
place, you’ll earn a brand-new name.”
What happens next???
"Now many of the reindeer were already very good
athletes so you can imagine their excitement when they learned of the
chance to try out for Santa’s sleigh
team!
The news spread quickly among the herds. And
before long, reindeer from all around the world began trekking their
way to the North Pole for try-outs."

Meet the Author:
Julie P. Robards
Julie Pelletier Robards lives in the
Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY with her husband Terry and their
Scottie Dog
— Baxter MacTavish II. Julie was born into a multi-talented musical
family from
Fayette, Maine, and is a historian, writer, educator and musician who
has
worked with children since 1983. She is the mother of 4 grown children,
grandmother to 15 and a great grandmother of 4.
She attended the Institute for the Study
of Antiques and Collectibles in Emmaus, PA and is the published author
of two
books on celluloid.
In 2005, Julie entered the world of
children’s entertainment as Julie Jingles, at Santa’s Workshop
in
Wilmington, NY. She also curated Santa’s Memory Lane, an exhibit room
dedicated
to the history of the theme park which features displays of
memorabilia,
souvenir items and photographs dating from opening day in 1949 through
the
1970s.
When not playing guitar and entertaining
children, she can be found teaching wine courses at Terry Robards Wines
&
Spirits in Lake Placid, or at Arts & Antiques, in AuSable Forks, NY.

Potthast
O. Grace Potthast is an alum of The High School
of Art and Design, a public high school in NYC. She lives in the
mountain
region of northern New York and is the Artist in residence at Santa’s
Workshop.
